Training - Frequently Asked Questions

You're here! and, I'm delighted that you are considering training with us.

With so many options out there for people who can support you with your outdoor learning, we feel it's important that you find the trainer who can best meet your needs. so we thought we would answer some frequently asked questions to give you a feel for who we are here at OutLET so we can welcome you onto our training courses.

What experience do you have to be able to deliver training?

The staff here at OutLET have a wealth of knowledge and experience both in delivering training and most importantly, in delivering outdoor programmes directly to children, young people, and families.   Our training has been developed by pulling together all of our collective experiences so that we can share them with you.

Our training team has over 20 years of experience working outdoors with various groups.

As well as this, our staff has undertaken extensive 'train the trainer courses, are Forest School Tutors, and are trained in pedagogy such as Wild Passport and bushcraft.

It's safe to safe that we really do know what we are doing!

Do I need to have experience working outdoors to take part in the training?

The short answer is no, the longer answer is that it depends on the course.
Many of our courses are designed for complete newbies and we are teaching outdoor skills at the entry-level. This includes our hugely popular Fundamental Outdoor Skills Course -  a 2-day course that provides you with all the basic practical skills you need to get groups outdoors.
Others such as the Forest and Outdoor Learning Award at Level 8 so require you to have some experience working with your groups and working outdoors.

Our courses are fully outdoors so it is advisable to have a basic comfort level of being outdoors and probably some suitable clothing such as a waterproof jacket and sturdy shoes/boots.

If you're in any doubt at all, please just drop us an email and our training coordinator will happily talk it through with you to ensure you get on the course that will be most successful for you.

I see you work with children and young people, I work with adults, will your courses be suitable for me?

Absolutely!  Yes here at OutLET we work a lot with children and young people, but we work with adult groups too, and if we're honest - Outdoor skills are outdoor skills, the swing might need to be put up a little higher but the skills are the same and very much interchangeable.   We love bringing together trainees from different backgrounds so that we can all share the wealth of knowledge and experience that we have.

Do you offer 'in-house' training?

Yes, we can do depending on how many people you have that you'd like to train.  If it's only a few then we would recommend joining together with another organisation, that way you can split the cost!

So once I've completed training with you - am I then on my own to deliver?

Here at OutLET, we believe that the initial training is only the first part of your journey into the world of outdoor learning and play.   It's great to attend training and leave buzzing with ideas and enthusiasm but the reality is that continually providing outdoor learning is hard!   Constantly planning and looking for ideas and inspiration can begin to feel like a bit of a lonely task - This is why we have created the OutLET Learning Community.

It is a space where all the previous trainees can come together and support one another while sharing experiences and ideas!  You will even have access to your tutor's knowledge and experience, because in all honesty - we are practitioners too, and understand how tough it can be and as the saying goes, many heads are better than one!
